The Krontihene of Akyem Asuom in the Eastern Region, Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, has declared that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) faces a difficult challenge ahead of the 2028 general elections, insisting that Ghanaians have already made up their minds against the party.
According to the traditional leader, who also serves as Board Chairman of the Ghana Commodity Exchange, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has so far performed strongly and would secure victory over former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the flag bearer of the NPP into the next elections.
Speaking during a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the 18.5-kilometre Subi-Asuom road in the Kwaebibirem Municipality, Nana Obodade III said no amount of campaigning by Dr. Bawumia would change the decision of the Ghanaian electorate.
He argued that many Ghanaians still remember the economic hardships and challenges experienced under the previous Akufo-Addo administration and would use that as the basis for their decision in 2028.
“I hear these days that Dr. Bawumia has started campaigning again and intends to intensify it. He can campaign in churches, mosques and everywhere else, but the people of Ghana have already made their decision,” he stated.
The chief also praised NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia for what he described as his “quick-witted” political responses to Dr. Bawumia.
Nana Obodade III further claimed that even some supporters of the NPP believe the party would suffer a heavy defeat in the next elections.
He contrasted the NDC and NPP, alleging that while one party seeks to serve the country, the other is more interested in personal gain.
The traditional ruler also commended President John Dramani Mahama for initiating the Subi-Asuom road project, expressing optimism that more development projects would be brought to the area.
He appealed to the government to upgrade the Asuom Hospital and address other developmental concerns within the district.
The 18.5-kilometre Subi-Asuom road project has been awarded to Propbureuw Construction Company limited and is expected to be completed within 18 months.
