Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland, H.E. Mrs. Sabah Zita Benson, has called for deeper legal cooperation between Ghana and the UK to help businesses operate with greater certainty and confidence.

Speaking at the 9th Annual Ghana-UK Law Week on Wednesday June 10, 2026, the High Commissioner said the relationship between the two countries is rooted in shared democratic values, respect for the rule of law, strong people-to-people connections, and a common commitment to justice and good governance, noting that both legal systems share a common-law heritage that supports cooperation in areas including judicial reform, legal education, arbitration, commercial law, and investment promotion.

“The United Kingdom remains one of Ghana’s most important partners in trade, investment, education and institutional development.”

“We welcome deeper cooperation between our bar associations, law societies, judicial institutions, universities and professional bodies.

Such collaboration can strengthen legal capacity, improve access to justice, support commercial certainty and facilitate economic growth.”

She said the rule of law is not only a constitutional principle but also an economic asset, noting that investors and businesses depend on enforceable contracts, protected property rights, predictable regulatory frameworks, and efficient dispute resolution systems.

Mrs. Benson highlighted that Ghana is strengthening these pillars while also undertaking broader reforms under President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda, which she said places legal and governance reform at the centre of national renewal and economic transformation.

“President John Dramani Mahama’s administration has placed legal and governance reform at the centre of its Reset Agenda, with a focus on strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing accountability, improving access to justice, and modernising Ghana’s constitutional and legal framework.”

The High Commissioner stated that Ghana’s democratic record, peaceful transitions of power, and commitment to constitutional governance remain among its strongest competitive advantages, while also stressing that the legal profession holds a strategic position in national development.

She said the legal ecosystem comprising of lawyers, judges, arbitrators, academics, and policymakers, helps create certainty and trust, which she noted are essential to economic activity and investment.

“Indeed, Ghana’s consistent democratic record, peaceful transitions of power, and commitment to constitutional governance remain among our strongest competitive advantages on the African continent.”

“The legal profession therefore occupies a strategic position in supporting national development. Lawyers, judges, arbitrators, academics and policymakers all play critical roles in creating the certainty and trust that underpin economic activity.”

Mrs. Benson also explained that Ghana offers compelling investment opportunities, describing the country as strategically located on the West African coast and as a gateway to Africa, while also hosting the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

She said Ghana’s market access extends to over 1.4 billion peopleacross the continent, and that increasing complexity in cross-border transactions creates opportunities for collaboration between legal professionals in Ghana and the United Kingdom.

“As Africa’s commercial landscape continues to evolve, Ghana offers compelling opportunities for investment. Strategically located on the West African coast and serving as a gateway to Africa while hosting the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area, Ghana provides investors with access to a market of over 1.4 billion people across Africa.”

She concluded that “The future of Ghana is one of optimism, resilience and opportunity. The Reset Agenda reflects our determination to build a stronger economy, more effective institutions, and a more prosperous society.”
