The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the alleged disappearance of a newborn baby girl from the maternity ward of the Salaga Government Hospital in the Savannah Region, a development that has left family members distressed and sparked widespread concern among residents of the municipality.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, just hours after the child’s birth.

According to information gathered from family members and eyewitnesses, the baby’s mother, Mrs. Bisila, a resident of Kulpi, was admitted to the Salaga Government Hospital at approximately 3:00 a.m. after going into labour.

She reportedly delivered a healthy baby girl around 6:00 a.m.

Relatives who accompanied the expectant mother to the hospital said they were instructed to remain outside the maternity ward following the delivery while the mother was transferred to another section of the facility for postnatal care.

The family explained that after waiting for some time without seeing the newborn, they requested permission to visit the baby.

However, they alleged that a midwife attending to the mother advised them to exercise patience and wait until the necessary procedures had been completed.

According to the relatives, the situation took a shocking turn later in the day when they again inquired about the whereabouts of the baby and were informed that the newborn could not be located.

Family members claim that a nurse at the facility later disclosed that she had briefly stepped away from the ward to breastfeed her own child.

Upon returning, she allegedly discovered that the newborn baby was no longer where she had been placed.

The matter was subsequently reported to the Salaga Police Station, which immediately commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the alleged disappearance.

Speaking to the media, an eyewitness, Mr. Ebenezer Balik, said the family remained anxious as efforts to locate the baby had, as of 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, yielded no results.

He disclosed that three individuals, including the nurse in charge of the maternity ward, the midwife who reportedly left the newborn unattended while she went to breastfeed her child, and another individual said to have been outside the hospital premises, had been apprehended and were assisting police investigators.

“The baby had still not been found as of 6:00 p.m. We have been informed that three people are currently helping the police with investigations into the matter,” Mr. Balik stated.

The incident has generated significant public interest and concern in Salaga and surrounding communities, with residents calling for a thorough and transparent investigation to establish exactly what transpired and ensure the safe recovery of the newborn.

Many community members have also expressed sympathy for the mother and her family, who are reportedly struggling to come to terms with the disappearance of the baby just hours after birth.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Ghana Police Service nor the management of the Salaga Government Hospital had issued an official statement on the incident.

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are yet to officially establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged disappearance of the child.

This report is based on eyewitness accounts, information provided by family members, and sources at the scene.

Further updates will be provided as more details emerge from the ongoing police investigation.
