The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that six persons have lost their lives while 34 others have been rescued following multiple road traffic crashes recorded across the Volta Region on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
According to the GNFS, emergency response teams from the Peki Fire Station and the Ho Regional Headquarters mounted swift rescue operations at various accident scenes, helping to save lives and transport injured victims to nearby health facilities for treatment.
The first set of incidents occurred along the Todome stretch near Kpeve on the Peki–Kpeve Road.
The GNFS said personnel from the Peki Fire Station responded to two simultaneous crashes after receiving a distress call at about 12:53 p.m.
The rescue team, led by Station Officer Two (STNO II) Richard Amenyogbeli, arrived at the scene at approximately 1:03 p.m. and immediately deployed resources to manage both emergencies.
One of the crashes involved a MAN Diesel TGS truck with registration number GT 9993-18, which was travelling from Tema to Tamale, and a Toyota Camry with registration number GE 735-14, travelling from Nkwanta to Accra.
The Service disclosed that all five occupants involved in that particular collision — made up of four males and one female — had already been rescued before firefighters arrived at the scene.
Both vehicles sustained partial damage.
The second accident on the same stretch involved a Metro Mass Transit bus with registration number AS 4984-09, which was travelling from Accra to Dambai with 28 passengers on board.
Firefighters successfully extricated and rescued 24 victims, comprising seven males and 17 females, who were subsequently transported to the Peki Government Hospital for medical attention.
However, four persons, including one male and three females, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The bodies of the deceased were later handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigations.
In a separate incident at the Ho Civic Centre, rescuers from the Ho Regional Headquarters also responded to another road traffic crash after receiving a distress call at about 1:04 p.m.
The rescue operation was led by Assistant Divisional Officer Two (ADO II) Seth Sarfo.
The crew reportedly arrived at the scene within two minutes and immediately commenced rescue efforts.
The crash involved a Hyundai Mighty truck with registration number GE 342-11, a Pragya tricycle bearing registration number 26-VR 455, and an unregistered motorbike.
A total of 10 victims were rescued and transported to the Ho Municipal Hospital and the Ho Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Subsequent follow-ups at the hospitals confirmed that two male victims later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll from the day’s accidents to six.
The Ghana National Fire Service noted that the vehicles involved in the crashes sustained varying degrees of damage, while investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes of the accidents.
The Service has meanwhile urged motorists to strictly comply with road safety regulations, avoid excessive speeding, exercise caution while driving, and ensure regular vehicle maintenance to help reduce preventable road traffic crashes across the country.
