The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has assured Parliament that the government’s school placement policy continues to uphold fairness, merit and equal access to quality education for all Ghanaian students.
The Minister gave the assurance when he appeared before Parliament to respond to questions concerning the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) and other key issues relating to the education sector.
According to him, the government remains committed to ensuring that every Ghanaian child is given an equal opportunity to access quality secondary education regardless of social or economic background.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu explained that the country’s Constitution guarantees every child the right to equal educational opportunities, stressing that the placement system has been carefully structured to promote transparency, fairness and equity in admissions into Senior High Schools (SHS) across the country.
He noted that the CSSPS continues to play a crucial role in eliminating discrimination and ensuring that qualified candidates are placed into schools based on merit and available opportunities.
Touching on the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy, the Minister disclosed that government has maintained a special intervention aimed at increasing the participation of students from public basic schools in top-performing Senior High Schools.
He explained that under the current arrangement, at least 30 percent of vacancies in Category “A” Senior High Schools are reserved for graduates from public basic schools to ensure equitable access to some of the country’s most prestigious second-cycle institutions.
Presenting the 2025 CSSPS placement statistics before Parliament, the Education Minister revealed that a total of 71,406 students from public basic schools secured admission into Category “A” Senior High Schools.
He stated that the figure represents 57.91 percent of all placements into the elite schools, significantly surpassing the government’s minimum target of 30 percent.
According to the Minister, the achievement demonstrates the effectiveness of government policies aimed at bridging educational inequality and expanding access to quality education for students from less privileged backgrounds.
He further emphasized that the placement outcomes reflect government’s determination to balance merit-based admissions with social equity considerations to ensure that hardworking students across the country are given equal opportunities to succeed.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu also reaffirmed government’s broader commitment to improving educational infrastructure, expanding access to teaching and learning resources, and implementing policies that promote inclusiveness across all levels of the education sector.
He assured Parliament that the Ministry of Education would continue to strengthen reforms within the educational system to guarantee quality, transparency and equal opportunities for every learner.
