The government has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, describing his death as a great loss to Dagbon and the nation as a whole.
In a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, July 13, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama, on behalf of the government, extended his heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians following the demise of the revered traditional ruler.
According to the statement, the President shares in the grief of the people of Dagbon during what it described as a period of immense national mourning.
The government paid glowing tribute to the late Yaa Naa, highlighting his exceptional leadership and the pivotal role he played in restoring peace and unity to Dagbon after years of conflict.
The Presidency noted that Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II’s reign will be remembered for bringing healing, reconciliation and lasting stability to the Dagbon Kingdom, following one of Ghana’s most protracted chieftaincy disputes.
It stated that his unwavering commitment to peace, unity and the welfare of his people created an atmosphere that encouraged development and strengthened cooperation between traditional authorities and the government in advancing the socio-economic progress of Dagbon and the country.
“The government pays tribute to the life and legacy of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II and honours his invaluable service to the nation,” the statement said.
It further praised the late King’s wisdom, leadership and dedication to peace, expressing hope that his example would continue to inspire future generations of leaders across Ghana.
President Mahama also prayed for the peaceful repose of the late monarch’s soul, saying, “May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
