The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed members who are engaging in activities with apparent parliamentary campaign undertones to immediately cease such activities ahead of the official opening of nominations.
The directive follows what the party says are growing activities by some members with parliamentary ambitions across various constituencies.
In a press release issued on Monday, September 14, 2026, the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, revealed that the party’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) had deliberated extensively on the matter before issuing the directive.
The party cautioned members against organising or participating in activities that could be intended to promote or advance parliamentary ambitions before the official nomination process begins.
According to the NDC, the restriction applies to both direct and indirect campaign activities.
It specifically mentioned meetings, engagements, constituency tours, donations, public appearances and other activities that are either designed to promote a potential parliamentary candidature or could reasonably be perceived as doing so.
“Following extensive deliberations, the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) is directing all members engaging in activities with parliamentary campaign undertones, whether directly or indirectly, to immediately cease such activities,” the statement said.
The directive is expected to apply across the party’s structures, with Regional, Constituency, Branch and other party organs instructed to ensure compliance.
The NDC said the decision is necessary to protect internal party unity, cohesion and the orderly functioning of its structures.
The party warned that members who disregard the directive could face disciplinary measures and severe sanctions under the NDC’s Constitution, rules and regulations.
It also instructed its various structures to report any breaches of the directive to the appropriate party authorities for action.
The warning signals the party’s intention to regulate activities that could create an early contest among potential parliamentary aspirants before the formal nomination period.
The NDC has not yet opened nominations for parliamentary candidates and says it will communicate the commencement of the process and the applicable guidelines at the appropriate time.
The governing party said its decision is aimed at ensuring that the eventual process for selecting parliamentary candidates is conducted in a transparent, orderly and credible manner.
It urged members with parliamentary ambitions and other party supporters to respect the established procedures and refrain from activities that could be interpreted as attempts to gain an early advantage.
The party further appealed to its members to remain disciplined and prioritise party unity while awaiting the formal announcement on the opening of nominations.
The directive comes as political activity within constituencies typically intensifies ahead of internal elections, with potential aspirants often engaging party supporters and community stakeholders through meetings, outreach programmes, donations and other public activities.
By asking members to suspend such engagements where they carry parliamentary campaign undertones, the NDC is seeking to maintain control over the timing and conduct of its internal candidate-selection process.
