The Ghana Police Service has launched investigations into a shooting incident involving a police officer and some members of the Ritz Junction Taxi Drivers Union, which left two people with gunshot wounds.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Ritz Junction, with preliminary investigations indicating that a confrontation between the officer and some taxi drivers preceded the shooting.

In a press release dated October 12, 2026, and referenced ARHQPAU/PRESS VOL.2/4, the Police Service said the Adenta-Abokobi Divisional Police Command was investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the police, the confrontation involved General Sergeant Mathew Aboase, who is stationed at the Madina Police Station, and some drivers belonging to the Ritz Junction Taxi Drivers Union.

Preliminary investigations suggest that tensions escalated during an exchange between the officer and the taxi drivers.

The police said the drivers attempted to disarm the officer after he allegedly threatened them with his pistol.

During the struggle, the weapon accidentally discharged, hitting two people who were nearby.

The circumstances leading to the confrontation, including what triggered the exchange and the events immediately preceding the discharge of the firearm, remain subject to police investigations.

The two victims have been identified as Doe Asinyo and Gifty Nyimahen, aged 34.

According to the police, Asinyo sustained a gunshot wound to the left thigh, while Nyimahen suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Both victims were rushed to the Madina Pentecost Hospital for medical attention.

Asinyo was treated and discharged from the hospital, while Nyimahen was admitted for treatment before being referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further medical care.

The police have not provided further details about Nyimahen’s condition following the referral.

The police have confirmed that General Sergeant Aboase has been arrested and is currently in custody pending further investigations.

The officer’s service pistol has also been retained by the police as evidence to assist with the investigation.

The arrest and retention of the firearm form part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine the appropriate course of action.

The Police Service has assured the public that the matter will be handled in accordance with the law.

In the statement, the Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, reiterated the command’s commitment to taking appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation.

The incident is expected to draw attention to the circumstances surrounding the confrontation between the officer and the taxi drivers, particularly the reported attempt to disarm the officer and the accidental discharge of the firearm.

However, the police have described the account as preliminary, and further investigations are expected to establish the full facts of the incident.

The outcome of the investigation will be crucial in determining the sequence of events, the circumstances under which the firearm was discharged, and whether any further action is warranted.

The police have urged the public to allow the investigative process to proceed as the Adenta-Abokobi Divisional Police Command works to establish the facts surrounding the shooting.
