The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has presented 20 tricycles to Assembly Members as part of efforts to strengthen waste collection and improve environmental sanitation across electoral areas within the metropolis.
The tricycles were presented by the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, to the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Hon. Musah Ziyad, on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at a ceremony attended by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga.
The equipment is expected to enhance the operational capacity of Assembly Members by facilitating the collection and evacuation of refuse during community sanitation exercises. It is also intended to support their efforts to mobilise residents and promote regular sanitation activities within their respective electoral areas.
Speaking at the presentation, Mr Ayariga commended the Mayor for the initiative, describing it as a practical investment in strengthening waste management infrastructure at the local government level.
He disclosed that the government is working to expand the country’s waste management infrastructure through the construction of additional waste transfer stations, adding that some development partners had also expressed interest in supporting the initiative.
The Minister stressed that addressing sanitation challenges required sustained investment across the entire waste management chain, including collection, transportation and final evacuation.
He said the AMA’s intervention aligned with the government’s broader commitment to improving sanitation infrastructure and strengthening the capacity of local authorities to manage waste effectively.
Mr Ayariga further urged other Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to emulate the initiative by allocating a greater proportion of their internally generated funds to productive sanitation and waste management projects.
He also called on Assembly Members to intensify public education and community mobilisation to encourage households to take greater responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings.
According to him, environmental sanitation must go beyond keeping individual homes clean and should encompass the collective responsibility of maintaining hygienic neighbourhoods and public spaces.
The distribution of the tricycles is expected to support community-level sanitation interventions and improve the Assembly’s efforts to ensure cleaner and healthier communities across the Accra metropolis.
