The Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Richard Asiedu, has reportedly threatened to deal with the Agona West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Eric Odoom Gyemfi, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Ernestina Ofori Dangbey, over their alleged opposition to his candidature in the party’s upcoming regional elections.

Dr Asiedu is alleged to have made the threats during a telephone conversation captured in an audio recording circulating publicly.

In the intercepted conversation, the regional chairman reportedly accused the MCE and the MP of working against him during the party’s recent constituency elections, claiming their actions contributed to the defeat of some individuals considered close to him.

Among those he is said to have mentioned was the former Agona West Constituency Chairman, Asiedu Sekomey, alongside other party members whom he believed would have supported his bid for another term as regional chairman.

According to the audio, Dr Asiedu expressed displeasure with the alleged conduct of the two political officeholders and warned that they would face consequences if he secures victory in the forthcoming regional elections.

He reportedly threatened to take action against Mr Gyemfi and indicated that he would work towards unseating Ms Dangbey as the Member of Parliament for Agona West.

The alleged remarks have raised concerns about the state of internal relations within the NDC in the Central Region, particularly as the party prepares for another round of internal elections.

The development also brings into focus the potential tensions between party executives and elected government officials, whose cooperation is considered important for effective party organisation and political mobilisation.

Although internal party elections are intended to provide members with an opportunity to choose their preferred leaders, the reported threats, if accurately represented in the audio, could further deepen divisions among party members and supporters in Agona West.

The comments also raise questions about the relationship between the regional leadership and the party’s parliamentary and municipal representatives, especially at a time when unity and cooperation are important to the party’s political fortunes.

However, the authenticity and full context of the audio recording have not been independently established. The responses of Dr Richard Asiedu, MCE Eric Odoom Gyemfi and MP Ernestina Ofori Dangbey to the allegations were also not available at the time of publication.

Further clarification from the individuals involved is expected to provide additional context to the controversy.
