The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akuapem South, Hon. Paul Osae Offei, has expressed strong confidence that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) will retain the Akuapem South parliamentary seat in the next general election, citing the government’s performance and ongoing development projects across the municipality.
Speaking in an interview with 1960news.com, Hon. Osae Offei said the NDC’s prospects in the constituency would largely depend on the performance of the government, himself, and the area’s Member of Parliament, adding that the work being done has already earned the trust and approval of residents.
According to him, the level of development currently taking place within the municipality is unprecedented and has generated positive feedback from communities across the constituency.
“If it is left to performance and comparing us to what was happening previously, then I am 100 percent sure that we are going to retain the seat and even widen the margin by which we won,” he stated.
The MCE noted that several initiatives and projects that had never been witnessed in the municipality are now being implemented under the current administration.
“Things that have never been seen or done within the municipality, we are seeing all of a sudden. The feedback from the ground is good, but we are guided not to be complacent,” he said.
Hon. Osae Offei stressed that while electoral success remains important, governance should be driven by the desire to improve the lives of citizens rather than focusing solely on winning votes.
“We should not lose focus because governance cannot be reduced to the next election. It must be about truly doing what has to be done for the people. But if we are talking about performance translating into votes, then we are not worried,” he added.
The MCE further praised the support being provided by the central government to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country, saying the assistance has enabled significant developmental interventions within Akuapem South.
He highlighted ongoing infrastructure and social development projects throughout the municipality, including efforts to address longstanding water supply challenges in communities such as Adamorobe.
“There are massive development works going on across the municipality. If we bring Adamorobe into focus, significant investments are being made to resolve the water problems there,” he explained.
Addressing concerns from some residents who have indicated they may reconsider their political support if campaign promises are not fulfilled, Hon. Osae Offei described such sentiments as normal in every democratic society.
“It is natural because people vote with expectations. If someone says, ‘I voted for you based on certain expectations and if they are not fulfilled, I will change how I vote,’ that is understandable,” he said.
Despite such concerns, the MCE maintained that he remains optimistic because he believes the administration of President John Dramani Mahama will deliver on its promises before the next election cycle.
“I am not shaken because I am assured that this government will deliver. That is where my confidence comes from,” he noted.
Hon. Osae Offei also singled out road infrastructure as one of the government’s strongest areas of performance, insisting that substantial improvements are already evident across the country.
“I think for every observer in this country, it is clear that the government is doing so well as far as roads are concerned. That is not in doubt and cannot be in doubt,” he stated.
He argued that if road development remains a key factor for voters, the NDC stands a strong chance of securing their support once again in the next election.
“If that is what they want to see to retain the NDC in power, then I am assured that in the next election we will have their votes because by then they would have seen the results,” he added.
The Akuapem South parliamentary seat is currently held by Lawrencia Adwoa Dziwornu of the NDC, who made history in the 2024 general elections by unseating the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) in what many political observers described as a major upset.
For years, Akuapem South had been regarded as a stronghold of the NPP since the constituency was established as a standalone seat.
However, the political landscape shifted dramatically during the 2024 parliamentary elections when Dziwornu secured a narrow but significant victory.
Official election results showed that Lawrencia Adwoa Dziwornu polled 15,438 votes, defeating the NPP’s candidate, Eric Yeboah Apeadu, who garnered 15,304 votes.
The victory marked one of the most notable electoral upsets in the Eastern Region and contributed to the NDC’s broader gains during the 2024 general elections.
With the next election cycle approaching, Hon. Osae Offei believes that the government’s development agenda, coupled with the continued delivery of infrastructure and social intervention projects, will further strengthen the NDC’s position in Akuapem South and help the party consolidate its historic breakthrough in the constituency.
