The Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has accused members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of attempting to distance themselves from the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, following his reported arrest in the Netherlands.
According to the Akyem Oda legislator, there has been a “sharp attempt” by some NDC supporters and communicators to portray the detained MP as an independent candidate instead of acknowledging his association with the Majority caucus in Parliament.
His comments come amid growing public discussion and political reactions surrounding the detention of the Asante Akyem North lawmaker at Schiphol Airport.
Reports indicate that Kwame Ohene Frimpong was arrested by Dutch security officials shortly after a KLM flight from Accra landed in Amsterdam.
The arrest is allegedly linked to investigations into romance scams and money laundering activities, although Ghanaian authorities are yet to officially confirm the specific allegations.
The development first became public after the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Djietror, disclosed in a Facebook post on May 12 that Parliament had been informed about the MP’s detention.
According to the statement, leadership of Parliament had already engaged Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the Hague to gather details about the circumstances surrounding the arrest and provide the necessary consular support.
Speaking on a political programme “Ekosii sen” on Asempa FM, Alexander Akwasi Acquah expressed disappointment over what he described as the insensitive posture adopted by some members of the Majority side following the arrest of their colleague.
The Oda MP argued that Parliament as an institution was unsettled by the incident, but claimed some NDC-affiliated individuals had instead chosen to capitalize politically on the situation.
“You know Parliament is not cool like that, and the saddest aspect of it is that after our colleague was arrested, there has been some sharp attempt by the NDC to disown him,” he stated during the interview.
He said social media platforms had been flooded with comments and write-ups from persons affiliated with the ruling party referring to Kwame Ohene Frimpong as an independent MP despite his cooperation with the Majority caucus in Parliament.
“It pains me because as a parliamentarian, I will not disown my colleague. We will pray for him. But he opted to join your caucus to work with you, and now you have started describing him as an independent candidate,” he said.
According to him, the timing of such comments was unfortunate and amounted to abandoning the legislator during a difficult period.
“He is part of your caucus, so why would you distance yourself from him at this critical moment? You should not do that because if you do that, then you have been wicked to him,” he added.
The Akyem Oda MP further alleged that some NDC supporters had already begun discussing the possibility of a by-election in the constituency, with claims that the seat could soon become vacant.
“All of a sudden, some NDC party people are even saying there is going to be a by-election very soon, claiming it is their own seat and they are going to win should there be a by-election,” he claimed.
The arrest of Kwame Ohene Frimpong has since generated significant public and political debate, with many observers calling for caution until official details emerge from Dutch authorities.
Meanwhile, Parliament and Ghana’s diplomatic officials in the Netherlands are expected to continue engagements to ascertain the full facts surrounding the case.
