Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda in the Eastern Region, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to reshuffle his ministers and heads of government agencies, arguing that such a move would inject fresh energy into the administration and improve the implementation of government policies.
According to the former Deputy Minister for Health, several cabinet ministers and chief executive officers of state institutions are underperforming, making it necessary for the President to replace them with more capable individuals who can effectively drive the government’s resetting agenda.
Mr. Acquah made the remarks on the floor of Parliament while contributing to discussions following the Black Stars’ recent victory over Panama.
Drawing lessons from the national team’s performance, the legislator said leadership sometimes requires bold changes in order to achieve success.
He commended Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz for the tactical substitutions and adjustments made during the game, insisting that the coach’s decisions ultimately changed the outcome of the match.
Reflecting on the game, the MP admitted that he initially lacked confidence in the team’s chances because some key players were unavailable for the encounter.
“When the T-shirts were being given. I almost gave mine out because I didn’t have confidence, knowing that most of our star players were not going to make it,” he stated.
He noted that the first half of the game was unimpressive and lacked the intensity expected from a national side, but the second-half transformation offered important leadership lessons.
“The 90-minute play taught me a lot of lessons. If at the first 45 minutes it went as if it was just a community small poles game, after the break things changed,” he said.
According to him, the turning point in the match came after the coach made strategic substitutions, which he believes demonstrates why periodic changes are necessary in governance as well.
“Had it not been the changes that the coach made, I’m sure we were not going to get this goal. In every sphere of life, if you want to maintain the same status quo, a lot of times it creates problems. If there is a need for change, let’s change for people to come in with some new energy,” he stressed.
Mr. Acquah argued that reshuffling government officials should not be viewed negatively but rather as an opportunity to strengthen leadership and improve performance.
“This is obviously what we are talking about — reshuffle,” he added.
Beyond the issue of leadership changes, the Akyem Oda legislator also highlighted the importance of teamwork, using the performance of Black Stars player Antoine Semenyo as an example.
He praised Semenyo for providing the crucial assist that led to Ghana’s winning goal, saying the forward demonstrated selflessness instead of pursuing personal glory.
“If Semenyo had decided to be greedy, we were not going to have the goal. We need to teach ourselves teamwork. It is not always that people have to think about scoring the goal and making a name for themselves,” he said.
The MP further noted that individuals who contribute behind the scenes to the success of others also deserve recognition and applause.
“For me, I only learned the name of the scorer this morning, but the play of Semenyo is what has remained in my mind,” he remarked.
Mr. Acquah congratulated the Black Stars for the victory and encouraged Ghanaians to embrace teamwork, sacrifice, and strategic leadership changes in national development.
