The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as “Ayitey Powers,” over an alleged threat of death made against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr Yaw Ampofo.
According to a press release issued by the Accra Regional Public Affairs Unit on Monday, August 24, 2026, the 46-year-old former boxer was arrested in connection with the alleged threat.
The Police said the arrest followed the circulation of a video on social media in which Ayitey Powers is alleged to have issued the threat against the NSA Director-General.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged threat were not immediately disclosed by the Police.
The former boxer is currently in Police custody and is assisting investigators as the Command works to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
The Accra Regional Police Command said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and to take appropriate action in accordance with the law.
The Police have not indicated whether the suspect has been formally charged with any offence.
The arrest comes after the alleged comments gained attention on social media, prompting the Police to intervene and commence investigations.
The Command has, however, cautioned members of the public against drawing conclusions or circulating unverified information while the investigation remains active.
In its statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Police assured the public that the matter was being handled through the appropriate legal processes.
The Command urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information concerning the incident, stressing the need to allow investigators to establish the facts.
The Police said further action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigations.
Ayitey Powers is a well-known former Ghanaian professional boxer who competed in the light heavyweight division and was a prominent figure in Ghana’s boxing scene.
The latest development has generated public interest, particularly because it involves a former high-profile sports personality and a senior official of the National Sports Authority.

For now, the former boxer remains in Police custody assisting with investigations as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the alleged threat.
