Flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has visited the mother of the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, in Kumasi following her son’s arrest and detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The former Vice President used the visit to reassure the elderly woman and urged her to remain calm as the anti-graft agency continues its investigations involving the MP.
Dr Bawumia assured her that no harm would come to her son and sought to ease concerns over his welfare while he remains in the custody of EOCO.
The visit took place on Friday, October 2, 2026, a day after Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah voluntarily reported himself to EOCO and was subsequently detained by the agency.
The Manhyia South MP surrendered to EOCO on Thursday, October 1, amid an ongoing investigation by the office.
In a statement, EOCO confirmed that the lawmaker voluntarily surrendered himself to the agency at about 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.
His detention has since attracted attention within the NPP, with party figures and supporters expressing concern over the circumstances surrounding the investigation and his continued stay in custody.
Dr Bawumia’s visit to the MP’s mother is expected to offer reassurance to the family as the legal and investigative processes continue.
The NPP flag bearer’s intervention also underscores the concern within the party over the situation involving one of its sitting Members of Parliament.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, a lawyer and MP for Manhyia South, has been at the centre of an investigation by EOCO, although the details and specific allegations under investigation have not been fully established in the information available.
The MP’s voluntary appearance before EOCO came after the agency had been pursuing matters connected to its investigation.
As the process continues, EOCO is expected to conduct further investigations and determine the appropriate next steps in accordance with the law.
Dr Bawumia’s message to the MP’s mother was therefore focused on assuring her of her son’s safety and encouraging her to remain composed while the matter is handled by the relevant authorities.
