The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has reported a major fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line, which disrupted power supply to parts of the country in the early hours of Thursday, August 20, 2026.
According to GRIDCo, the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. when the national power system experienced the fault on the transmission line.
The fault triggered the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units, as well as some thermal generating plants, as part of the system’s protection mechanisms.
GRIDCo explained that the automatic tripping was necessary to safeguard the integrity and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The development consequently resulted in the loss of electricity supply to some parts of the country.
In a statement issued on Thursday, GRIDCo said its engineers immediately mobilised following the incident and began efforts to restore the affected power supply.
The engineers, working in coordination with other agencies within the power sector, isolated the affected transmission line and commenced a safe and systematic restoration of the national power system.
“Power supply has already been restored to some affected areas, and restoration efforts are progressing steadily to ensure that supply is restored to all remaining affected customers as quickly and safely as possible,” the company said.
GRIDCo assured consumers that all relevant technical teams had been fully mobilised and were working with urgency to achieve complete restoration.
The company also apologised for the inconvenience caused by the temporary outage and urged the public to remain patient as restoration activities continue.
GRIDCo said it would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available on the system disturbance and restoration process.
The company expressed appreciation to the public for its patience, understanding and cooperation while technical teams work to restore normal power supply.
The latest disruption comes amid the critical role of the Akosombo-Volta transmission corridor in Ghana’s electricity transmission network, making any major fault along the line capable of affecting power supply to multiple areas.

GRIDCo, which is responsible for operating and maintaining Ghana’s national electricity transmission system, said its immediate priority remains the safe and complete restoration of power to all affected customers.
The company’s Corporate Communications Section issued the statement from Tema on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
