British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed that the United States formally requested permission to use UK military bases for what he described as a specific and limited defensive purpose aimed at stopping Iran from launching further missile attacks across the Middle East.
According to Starmer, the UK government has agreed to the request in order to help prevent additional missile strikes that could destabilize the region and threaten British nationals and allied forces.
The Prime Minister stressed that Britain was not part of the initial joint US-Israeli strike that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, but said the situation has changed following Iran’s retaliatory missile and drone attacks across the Gulf.
Some of those attacks reportedly endangered areas where British citizens and personnel are present.
Starmer framed the decision as a matter of collective self-defence and protection of allies, adding that the UK’s involvement would remain focused on defensive measures rather than offensive operations.
He also stated that the decision was taken in line with international law.
The move marks a significant escalation in the conflict, with Western powers now directly coordinating defensive military responses as tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel intensify.
