The decision comes midway through the 2025/26 season, despite Maresca’s notable achievements during his tenure, which began on July 1, 2024, after his appointment from Leicester City on a five-year contract.
In the statement, Chelsea acknowledged Maresca’s contributions, highlighting his leadership in securing the UEFA Conference League title in May 2025 – a 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the final – and the FIFA Club World Cup in July 2025, defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the expanded tournament’s final.
“During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club,” the statement read.
The club explained that the mutual departure was aimed at revitalising the team’s campaign, with significant objectives still at stake.
“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.”
Chelsea concluded by wishing Maresca well for the future.
The Italian coach, who guided the Blues to a fourth-placed Premier League finish in his first season and Champions League qualification, had faced mounting pressure following a poor run of form, including just one win in seven league games leading into the new year.
Maresca’s exit marks another managerial change under the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital ownership, continuing a pattern of short tenures at Stamford Bridge.
