A senior research fellow at the University of Ghana, George Domfey, has stirred debate on the rising cost of living after revealing a sharp increase in his monthly electricity expenses.

Mr. Domfey has disclosed that his electricity bill has surged from about GHS700 a year ago to GHS1,660 currently more than double what he previously paid.

He noted that the increase has occurred despite widely publicised claims of macroeconomic stability by government officials.

“Meanwhile, my salary has remained largely unchanged. This disparity suggests underlying inconsistencies that warrant critical examination,” he wrote on his Facebook page, expressing frustration over the growing financial strain.

The post, which ended with the phrase “Ayɛ den ooo!!” directed at President John Dramani Mahama, has resonated with many Ghanaians online who say they are facing similar challenges with utility costs and stagnant incomes.

Domfey’s comments come at a time when concerns about inflation, utility tariffs, and overall living expenses continue to dominate public discourse. While government has maintained that key economic indicators are stabilising, some citizens argue that the realities at the household level tell a different story.

Energy analysts have long pointed to factors such as tariff adjustments, fuel costs, and exchange rate pressures as contributors to rising electricity prices. However, critics say the pace of increases, coupled with limited income growth, is placing an unsustainable burden on consumers.

The post has since fueled broader discussions on social media, with many calling for a review of utility pricing and stronger measures to cushion households against escalating costs.
