A joint anti-galamsey operation by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Blue Water Guards has led to the arrest of eight suspected illegal miners and the seizure of heavy equipment during a late-night swoop in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.
The targeted operation, carried out on Thursday, April 30, 2026, focused on illegal mining activities along the Oda River corridor, particularly within the communities of Mpatasie and Odaho areas long associated with persistent galamsey operations.
According to operational details, the mission was launched following credible intelligence indicating ongoing mining activities along both the roadside and the banks of the Oda River.
Acting swiftly, the joint taskforce mobilised from its base in Manso Adubia at about 10:30 p.m., using the element of surprise to advance on the sites before the miners could flee.
Upon arrival, the team encountered several individuals actively engaged in illegal mining.
A coordinated approach led to the arrest of eight suspects at the scene.
The individuals, aged between 23 and 38, are reported to hail from various parts of the country, including Bolgatanga, Tepa, Wa, Navrongo, and the local communities of Odaho and Anwia Nkwanta.
A subsequent search of the area resulted in the discovery of four excavators believed to have been used for the illegal operations.
The machines comprising Sany, Hyundai, and XCMG models were found in varying conditions, with some missing key electronic components such as control boards and monitors.
Authorities say this reflects a common tactic by illegal miners to remove valuable parts ahead of possible security crackdowns.
Two motorbikes suspected to belong to the miners were also impounded during the exercise.
The arrested individuals have been handed over to the police at Antoa Krom to assist with investigations and potential prosecution.
Meanwhile, the seized excavators have been transported to a secure holding facility in Kumasi.
Officials say the operation highlights the growing effectiveness of coordinated efforts between NAIMOS and the Blue Water Guards, particularly in riverine zones where illegal mining continues to pose a serious threat to water bodies and surrounding ecosystems.
The authorities have reiterated their commitment to intensifying surveillance and enforcement, stressing that illegal mining activities will be pursued relentlessly, regardless of the time of day, until affected environments especially critical water sources like the Oda River are restored.
