Illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, have reportedly taken over portions of the Agenda 111 hospital project site at Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, raising serious concerns among residents about environmental destruction and the future safety of the area.
Residents say the abandoned or stalled hospital project site has now become a hotspot for illegal miners who continue to excavate large portions of land in search of gold, leaving behind deep pits and destroying the surrounding landscape.
The situation, according to community members, is not only threatening the future of the health facility but also exposing the area to possible flooding during the rainy season.
Some residents who spoke to the media expressed disappointment over the development, describing it as unfortunate that a project intended to improve healthcare delivery in the district has now been overtaken by illegal mining activities.
They fear that if immediate action is not taken by the authorities, the area could suffer severe environmental consequences, including erosion and flooding that may affect nearby homes and farms.
According to the residents, the continuous digging around the project site has altered the natural drainage system in the area, increasing the risk of floodwaters overflowing into surrounding communities whenever it rains heavily.
“We are worried because the miners are digging everywhere. When the rains become intense, this place could easily flood and affect many people,” a resident lamented.
Others also questioned why the project has remained abandoned for a long period, creating room for illegal miners to invade the area unchecked.
The Agenda 111 initiative, introduced by the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to improve healthcare infrastructure across the country, was expected to provide modern medical services to residents of Adansi Asokwa and nearby communities upon completion.
However, with the project currently stalled and illegal mining activities escalating around the site, residents say the dream of accessing quality healthcare in the district may be under threat.
Community leaders are therefore calling on the government, security agencies and relevant state institutions to urgently intervene by halting the illegal mining operations and securing the project site.
They are also appealing for work on the hospital project to resume immediately to prevent further encroachment and restore hope among residents.
Meanwhile, some residents have warned that unchecked galamsey activities continue to pose serious threats to water bodies, farmlands and infrastructure across several parts of the country.
Residents of Adansi Asokwa say they remain hopeful that swift action will be taken before the situation worsens and leads to a major environmental disaster.
