The Ghana Education Service (GES) has closed its online recruitment portal shortly after opening it on April 10, 2026, following an overwhelming response from applicants.
In just a few days, the Service recorded more than 40,000 applications for only 7,000 available teaching slots. Officials say the decision to close the portal earlier than scheduled was necessary to manage the large volume of submissions.
Addressing a press briefing in Accra, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu explained that the limited number of vacancies is due to financial constraints, despite the high demand for teaching jobs nationwide.
He noted that with adequate funding, the government could have recruited as many as 50,000 teachers across the country, but current budget limitations make that impossible.
Mr. Iddrisu also emphasized that the recruitment exercise has been conducted in a transparent and open manner, with the Ministry receiving approval to hire a capped number of qualified applicants, including both degree and diploma holders.
He described the overwhelming interest as a clear indication of the increasing demand for employment within the education sector.
According to him, applicants who successfully submitted their forms before the portal closure will undergo a rigorous assessment process based on their qualifications, competence, and preparedness for the classroom.
The Minister further assured that the selection process will be strictly merit-based and fair to all candidates.
