The general secretary of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Jerry Owusu Appauh, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain united and support the party’s newly elected national leadership as it seeks to rebuild its political fortunes.
Mr Appauh made the call when he delivered a solidarity message on behalf of the LPG at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
Addressing delegates, he appealed to NPP members, including those who are unhappy with developments within the party, to put aside their differences and support the decisions taken at the conference.
“All NPPs, both here and away; all NPPs, both happy and unhappy, we are telling you, this is not the time,” he said.
According to him, the party’s current circumstances require unity rather than continued attention to criticisms from former members and personalities who have become openly critical of the NPP.
He specifically mentioned former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen and former Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, arguing that their public interventions could contribute to divisions within the party.
“To be very fair and sincere, somebody like Hon. Alan Kyerematen and Dr Frimpong-Boateng are out there and a lot of people are listening to them. And that is causing some kind of problem,” he said.
Mr Appauh urged NPP delegates to fully endorse the outcome of the conference and support whichever candidates they elected to lead the party.
He said the NPP should view the election of its national officers as an opportunity to strengthen its internal structures and prepare for the political challenges ahead.
“Whoever you are voting for, you have to be happy that you are having such leaders to lead you. Don’t pay attention to those who are going to distract you,” he told the delegates.
He further claimed that many Ghanaians are dissatisfied with the country’s current political situation and are looking back at the leadership style of former Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
“Ghanaians are already disappointed. Ghanaians have already given up. Ghanaians are crying. And Mr Flagbearer, the former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghanaians say they miss you and they want your style and your leadership,” he stated.
Mr Appauh stressed that his comments are intended as a factual assessment rather than an attempt to merely praise the NPP or its leadership.
“I’m not here just to sing praises, but I’m just trying to be factual,” he said.
The LPG representative also used the occasion to express disappointment with the delegation sent by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the NPP conference.
He criticised NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey and National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah for allegedly selecting representatives who, in his view, did not demonstrate sufficient tolerance for democratic engagement at an event of such importance.
“I must say I am disappointed in my colleagues, General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey and the Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for nominating people who do not have patience for democracy to represent a party like NDC at a programme of this magnitude,” he said.
According to him, the NDC’s national leadership had an opportunity to use its participation in the NPP conference to promote political tolerance and strengthen Ghana’s democratic culture.
“A programme [where] the national officers of the NDC could have honoured to strengthen our democracy,” he said.
Mr Appauh claimed that members of the NDC delegation became angry and left the venue, describing the incident as unfortunate.
“Your people came and they got angry and left. What a shame to a political party like NDC,” he stated.
His remarks ultimately centred on the need for political parties to protect democratic values and tolerate differences, particularly during periods of intense internal and national political competition.
He said the conduct of political actors at major party events could have implications beyond the individual parties involved, stressing the importance of demonstrating respect for democratic processes.
The NPP’s ongoing National Delegates Conference in Kumasi has brought together party delegates and senior officials to elect national officers and deliberate on issues concerning the future direction and organisation of the party.
