The government is set to commission and deploy 100 newly acquired buses to the fleet of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) on Friday May 22, as part of efforts to improve public transportation across the country.
The commissioning ceremony will take place at the MMTL headquarters in Accra and will be led by the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, together with his deputy, Dorcas Affo-Toffey.
The buses will officially be inaugurated by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
The deployment of the buses is expected to bring relief to commuters in Accra, Kumasi, Tema and other major cities where residents have long struggled with transport delays, overcrowding and inadequate bus availability.
According to the Transport Ministry, the initiative forms part of a broader government agenda aimed at revitalising Ghana’s public transport system and improving mobility for both urban and rural communities.
The buses are expected to operate on major routes including Kasoa, Amasaman, Pokuase, Madina, Adenta, Dodowa and Tema, as well as key transport corridors in the Ashanti, Central, Western and Eastern regions.
The newly acquired 29-seater Isuzu Geyushi buses were imported from Egypt and are part of a larger government plan to procure 300 buses to strengthen the country’s transport network.
Deputy Transport Minister Dorcas Affo-Toffey, who also serves as Member of Parliament for Jomoro Constituency in the Western Region, played a key role in facilitating the acquisition process on behalf of the government and the Transport Ministry.
She reportedly travelled to Egypt to engage with the manufacturers and oversee arrangements to ensure the buses were safely delivered and suited for operations on Ghanaian roads.
