The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced temporary power supply interruptions in parts of Accra following severe flooding caused by ongoing heavy rains.
In a joint press release issued on Monday, June 29, 2026, the two power institutions disclosed that critical electricity infrastructure, including the Mallam and Achimota primary substations, had been affected by flooding, forcing authorities to shut down power supply from the facilities as a precautionary measure.
According to GRIDCo and ECG, the decision was necessary to protect lives, electrical equipment and operational personnel from potential danger arising from the flooding situation.
“The precautionary shutdown became necessary because the flooding has affected critical power infrastructure at a number of substations, posing significant risks to both electrical equipment and operational personnel,” portions of the statement said.
The two institutions explained that the temporary suspension of electricity supply forms part of efforts to prevent extensive damage to the national transmission and distribution network while ensuring public safety during the adverse weather conditions.
GRIDCo and ECG further indicated that engineers and technical teams are closely monitoring the situation and conducting detailed assessments to determine the extent of the impact on affected infrastructure.
The statement also warned that additional power interruptions could occur in other flood-prone areas if safety concerns persist.
“As the heavy rains and flooding persist, the public is advised that power supply may be temporarily interrupted in other affected areas, where necessary, as a precautionary measure to protect lives, property, and critical electricity infrastructure whenever safety risks are identified,” the statement added.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and immediately report any electricity-related hazards such as fallen poles, exposed cables, damaged transformers or flooded electrical installations to the nearest ECG office or through the company’s customer service channels.
The power distributors stressed that prompt reporting by the public would support emergency response efforts and help avert accidents during the rainy period.
GRIDCo and ECG apologised to customers affected by the outages and appealed for patience and cooperation as restoration efforts continue.
The institutions assured the public that power supply would be restored as soon as weather conditions improve and it is deemed safe to reconnect the affected substations.
