The Ghana Association of Elected Assembly Members (GAAM) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Electoral Commission (EC), threatening legal action if the recently suspended District Level By-elections are not rescheduled within two weeks.
The friction stems from a series of directives issued by the EC late last year.
In late October 2025, the Commission announced the reopening of nominations for vacant electoral areas.
However, by November 3rd, a follow-up notice indefinitely suspended the process, leaving aspiring local leaders and constituents in a state of uncertainty.
In a petition signed by Vincent Yormedor, GAAM’s Coordinating Secretary, the association expressed deep “regret” over the last-minute cancellation.
The group highlighted the following concerns:
Many candidates had already invested significant time and financial resources into their campaigns following the initial announcement.
Vacant seats in various electoral areas mean that thousands of citizens are currently without direct representation at the district level.
The association criticized the “eleventh hour” nature of the suspension, which according to them has caused widespread confusion among stakeholders.
”The sudden cancellations are very regrettable. We call on your outfit as a matter of urgency to conduct the supposed elections as soon as possible.”
GAAM has made it clear that they are prepared to escalate the matter.
If a positive response and a clear timeline are not provided by the Electoral Commission within two clear weeks, the association plans to seek redress in the court of law.
This development puts fresh pressure on the EC to provide a roadmap for filling the vacancies, as local government advocates argue that further delays could undermine the decentralization process in Ghana.

Having notified the general public by your outfit through the press released on October 29th, 2025 captioned ” *Reopening of Nominations District Level By-elections, 2025*” by deputy chairman, operations Mr Samuel Tetteh and further release dated 3rd November, 2025 putting on hold until further notice the said by-elections across the country by one deputy Director Research, Monitoring and Evaluation department, Mr Fred Tetteh.
The above Association ( *GAAM* ) have observed with keen interest the preparations made by a lot of people to contest for such vacant positions in various electoral areas across the country and sudden cancellations on the eleventh hour very regrettable and therefore, call your outfit as a matter of urgency to conduct the supposed elections as soon as possible.
Failure to hear positve response from your high office on the said matter within two clear weeks, will pave way for the Association to seek redress in the law court.
