Chairperson and Leader of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, has taken aim at President John Dramani Mahama over his recent comments concerning US-based Ghanaian journalist and political commentator Kevin Ekow Baidoo Taylor.
Ms Nabla challenged the President’s assertion that Taylor is a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), insisting that the commentator has instead maintained a long-standing association with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a social media statement, the PNP leader also questioned President Mahama’s response to previous allegations about his relationship with Taylor.
“Mahama is an irresponsible father! Kevin said you hired him to insult Ghanaians, and you denied it, but you believe him when he says he is NPP?” she wrote.
Ms Nabla went further to allege that Taylor has been an NDC supporter and card-bearing member since 2012.
“The truth is, Kevin has been an NDC foot soldier and a card bearing member since 2012,” she claimed.
She did not, however, provide documentary evidence in the statement to support the specific claim about Taylor’s alleged NDC membership.
Ms Nabla’s comments follow President Mahama’s recent effort to distance himself from Taylor amid renewed public discussion about the commentator’s political affiliation.
Speaking in an interview that has attracted significant attention on social media, President Mahama said he has no personal relationship with Taylor and has never spoken with him.
“Kevin Taylor is an NPP member, just that he is also disappointed in the party and has turned his fire on them and against some men of God. I don’t know him and I have never spoken with him before,” the President said.
President Mahama explained that his association is with Taylor’s father, whom he said he met during the 2024 election campaign.
“It is his father who is a Chief in Abora that I know through the campaign, so I will speak with his father to advise him,” he added.
The comments were interpreted as a clear attempt by the President to distinguish himself and his administration from Taylor’s activities and political commentary.
Taylor, who is based in the United States and hosts “With All Due Respect”, has established a significant presence in Ghana’s online political discourse.
Through his programme and social media platforms, he has frequently expressed support for President Mahama while criticising the NPP, opposition figures and other public personalities.
His commentary has also extended to issues involving traditional authorities, religious leaders and other influential figures, often generating strong reactions from both supporters and critics.
His outspoken stance has consequently fuelled debate over his political allegiance, with some opponents of the Mahama administration alleging that his commentary reflects the interests of the NDC.
President Mahama, however, has rejected any such association, describing Taylor as an NPP member who became disillusioned with the party and subsequently turned his criticism against it.
The disagreement over Taylor’s political identity is not new.
Previous political figures have also made conflicting claims about his affiliation. In 2021, former NDC Minority Chief Whip Mubarak Muntaka Mubarak was reported to have described Taylor as an NPP member who had turned against the party.
At the same time, Taylor’s strong support for Mahama and criticism of the NPP have continued to fuel speculation about his political loyalties.
However, public commentary or perceived political alignment does not, by itself, establish formal party membership or an official relationship with a political administration.
Ms Nabla’s latest intervention has therefore added another dimension to the debate, directly challenging the President’s description of Taylor as an NPP member.
Taylor remains a prominent and controversial figure in Ghana’s digital political space, with his broadcasts regularly attracting attention from politicians, activists and members of the public.
Supporters view his commentary as an independent platform for political criticism and scrutiny, while his critics have accused him of partisan advocacy.
The latest exchange between Ms Nabla and President Mahama has brought those competing perceptions back into focus.
While President Mahama maintains that Taylor is an NPP member whom he does not personally know or communicate with, Ms Nabla alleges that the commentator has been an NDC supporter and card-bearing member since 2012.
Her claim about Taylor’s alleged NDC membership remains unsubstantiated by documentary evidence in the statement she issued.
