President John Dramani Mahama has announced his first ministerial reshuffle since assuming office on January 7, 2025, nominating two Members of Parliament as Ministers of State while reassigning two serving ministers to new portfolios.
The changes, announced in a statement issued by the Presidency on Friday, August 7, 2026, were made in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires parliamentary approval for ministerial appointments.
Under the new nominations, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, has been nominated as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.
Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has also been nominated as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
The President has forwarded the names of the two nominees to Parliament through the Speaker for prior approval.
As part of the reshuffle, President Mahama has also reassigned two serving ministers to new ministries.
Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has been moved to head the Ministry of Defence.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Ibrahim, who previously served as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has been reassigned as Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources.
The Presidency’s statement, signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, did not provide reasons for the changes.
The reshuffle marks the first major reorganisation of President Mahama’s ministerial team since he was sworn into office in January 2025 following his return to the presidency.
Attention will now shift to Parliament, where the two ministerial nominees are expected to undergo vetting before the Appointments Committee ahead of a vote on their approval.
