Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has been granted GH¢50 million bail with three sureties by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after spending a night in the agency’s custody.
The MP voluntarily reported to EOCO’s premises at about 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, to assist investigators with an ongoing investigation into alleged economic and organised crimes.
He was subsequently placed under arrest and remained in custody overnight while the investigative process continued.
His release on bail follows an arrest warrant issued by the Accra High Court after EOCO told the court that previous efforts to secure his attendance for questioning had not produced the desired outcome.
EOCO’s investigation concerns allegations of criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering, tax-related offences and other related matters.
Nana Baffour Awuah, who is also the Senior Partner of Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners, has denied aspects of the allegations.
In particular, he has rejected the allegation that he received GH¢2.2 million in legal fees, while also disputing EOCO’s account of its earlier attempts to secure his attendance for questioning.
The MP’s latest appearance before EOCO follows a series of developments surrounding the investigation.
According to EOCO, the agency had invited him on two occasions in February 2026 to assist with its investigations but said the invitations were not honoured. Nana Baffour Awuah has, however, disputed this account, explaining that the correspondence related to his former role as Senior Partner of the law firm and its representation of SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited.
The investigation gained wider public attention on September 23, 2026, when EOCO officials attempted to arrest the MP at the Accra High Court.
Nana Baffour Awuah resisted the arrest, describing the action as an “unlawful arrest” and an “attempted kidnap” before subsequently seeking sanctuary at Parliament.
EOCO later pursued the matter through the court, resulting in the arrest warrant that preceded his voluntary appearance at the agency on October 1.
Following his arrest, EOCO said the MP is cooperating with investigators as the process continued.
In its latest statement, EOCO said it would continue the investigation professionally, independently and in accordance with due process.
The agency said it would pursue all relevant lines of inquiry, examine the available evidence and ensure that all persons involved in the investigation are afforded their constitutional and legal rights.
EOCO also cautioned the public against drawing conclusions about the culpability of any individual before the investigative and judicial processes are completed.
The agency said further information would be provided when appropriate and legally permissible.
The detention of the Manhyia South MP has also triggered reactions from members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has challenged EOCO to intensify efforts to identify and prosecute the financiers and organisers behind Ghana-linked drug trafficking networks.
The Effutu MP questioned what he described as the agency’s focus on opposition politicians and called for greater attention to individuals allegedly financing and coordinating major narcotics operations. His comments followed Nana Baffour Awuah’s arrest and detention.
For now, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah remains under investigation and has not been convicted of any offence. The allegations against him remain matters for the ongoing investigative and judicial processes to determine.
