The Media Coalition for Good Governance (MCGG) has commended Ghanaian businessman Ibrahim Mahama following his company’s successful takeover of operations at the Damang Mines.

The Coalition described the transition—facilitated by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources—as a significant step in strengthening indigenous participation in Ghana’s extractive sector.

Mr. Mahama, Founder and CEO of Engineers and Planners, officially assumed control after the government’s handover of the facility.

In a statement, MCGG expressed optimism about Mr. Mahama’s ambitious development agenda for the Damang enclave.

Key among the proposals are plans to construct an airport within six months, establish two hospitals, and develop several astroturf sports facilities in surrounding communities.

According to the Coalition, these projects—if delivered—could significantly improve livelihoods and accelerate socio-economic growth in the area.

It added that it would closely monitor progress to ensure that the commitments translate into tangible benefits for residents.

Beyond the Damang development, MCGG used the occasion to raise concerns about the impact of political interference on Ghanaian businesses.

The group noted that frequent changes in political leadership often lead to the decline or collapse of local enterprises perceived to be aligned with opposing political interests.

This trend, the Coalition warned, undermines innovation, limits job creation, and weakens economic resilience.

It contrasted the situation with countries like Nigeria, where strong support systems have enabled local entrepreneurs to dominate key sectors such as banking, energy, and telecommunications.

MCGG stressed the need for a national reset, urging stakeholders to prioritize economic growth over partisan interests.

It called for greater protection of entrepreneurs who invest in the country and create employment opportunities.

The Coalition also highlighted the contributions of notable Ghanaian business leaders, including Paa Kwesi Nduom, Kwesi Twum, Osei Kwame Despite, Seidu Agongo, Kwaku Oteng, Kessben Group, Justmoh Construction, Kofi Job, Tobinco Group, Togbe Afede XIV, and J. A. Biney, noting their role in driving job creation and economic development.

It further cautioned against the spread of misinformation and politically motivated narratives about successful entrepreneurs, warning that such tendencies discourage ambition and hinder national progress.

MCGG called on government, civil society, and the private sector to work together to create a stable and supportive environment where Ghanaian businesses can thrive without fear of political interference.
