The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Ghana Police Service to protecting lives and property, assuring the public that criminals across the country will continue to face relentless pursuit and prosecution.
The IGP gave the assurance when the leadership and members of the Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MoMAG) paid a courtesy call on him at the Police Headquarters in Accra to commend the service for its efforts in combating robbery attacks, especially those targeting mobile money vendors.
During the visit, the group presented a plaque, citation, and 100 cartons of bottled water to the Ghana Police Service in appreciation of what they described as the professionalism and dedication of the police in safeguarding their businesses and ensuring public safety.
Speaking on behalf of the group, President of MoMAG, Edward Ofori Agyemang, praised the police administration under the leadership of the IGP for intensifying intelligence-led operations against armed robbers and criminal gangs terrorising citizens and mobile money agents.
According to him, the police have demonstrated strong commitment in addressing insecurity and bringing perpetrators to justice.
“We have seen the good work the Ghana Police Service is doing under the leadership of the IGP, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno. The intelligence systems they have put in place to deal with robbers worrying citizens and mobile money agents are commendable,” he stated.
Mr Agyemang referenced some recent robbery incidents, including attacks in Kumasi and Tema Community 5, where mobile money vendors were targeted, noting that the swift response and arrests made by the police had restored confidence among operators in the sector.
He particularly commended the Police Service for its professionalism in handling a recent robbery case involving a police officer, saying the leadership did not attempt to shield its own officer from investigations and prosecution.
“If it were some other institutions, they might try to protect their own, but we commend the IGP and the Police Service for their honesty and commitment to justice.This has increased public confidence in the police,” he added.
The MoMAG President further appealed to the police administration to strengthen security operations across the country to further reduce attacks on mobile money vendors and the general public.
He stressed that improved security would boost confidence among mobile money agents, who continue to play a critical role in financial transactions and economic activities nationwide.
Receiving the delegation, IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno expressed gratitude to the group for the recognition and support, describing the gesture as both encouraging and motivating for officers across the country.
“The entire Ghana Police Service, including the last policeman in the remotest part of this country, says thank you very much to the MoMAG group for this wonderful gesture,” he said.
The IGP noted that although the police considered their efforts as part of their constitutional duty, the appreciation from the public would inspire officers to continue sacrificing day and night to maintain peace and security.
He praised intelligence officers, operational teams, and personnel stationed at checkpoints for their vigilance and dedication in helping to unravel crimes and arrest suspects involved in criminal activities.
Mr Yohuno stressed that the Police Service remained determined to make Ghana a peaceful and secure country and warned criminals that they would not escape justice.
“We want to send a strong warning to criminals wherever they are that we will not give up in our efforts to protect Ghanaians. In this modern day of policing, they can run but they cannot hide,” he cautioned.
The IGP also urged members of the public not to resist armed robbers during attacks but rather cooperate and allow security agencies to pursue and apprehend the criminals afterward.
According to him, human life remains more valuable than material possessions.
“If a criminal attacks you and demands your phone, money, laptop, or even your car, just give it to them. Your life is more precious than those items. Security agencies will come after the criminals,” he advised.
He further disclosed that many suspected criminals involved in unresolved cases had recently been arrested and are currently facing prosecution, adding that police personnel across the country were working tirelessly to ensure justice was served.
Mr Yohuno assured Ghanaians that the Police Service would continue to rely on public cooperation and intelligence sharing to fight crime effectively and maintain peace across the country.
