Uganda’s long-serving President, Yoweri Museveni, has ganered victory in the country’s general election, securing a seventh consecutive term in office.
Museveni, who faced opposition from Robert Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, and six other contenders, dominated the polls.
According to provisional results reported by Uganda-based NTV, Museveni received 5,148,845 votes, representing 75.38% of the total votes cast.
Bobi Wine followed with 1,414,619 votes (20.17%), while Nathana Nandala garnered 144,564 votes (2.12%). Mugisha Muntu received 38,582 votes (0.56%), with Frank Buura close behind at 29,713 votes (0.44%).
The remaining candidates—Robert Kasibante, Mubarak Munyagwa, and Joseph Mabirizi—received 20,626 (0.30%), 19,034 (0.28%), and 14,106 votes (0.21%) respectively.
Prior to the vote counting, Bobi Wine had threatened nationwide protests if the election was rigged, amid reports of polling delays and technical issues.
However, Electoral officials attributed the delays to malfunctions in biometric voter identification kits, while others cited an internet and network shutdown that began the night before the polls.
