Land preparation has commenced for the construction of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, in what the government says forms part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s health infrastructure.
The project, announced by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, is expected to replace the hospital’s existing and deteriorating Maternity Unit with a modern facility equipped to provide a wide range of specialised maternal, neonatal and reproductive health services.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the project reflects President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed focus on investments in major health infrastructure across the country.
“President Mahama is back with investments in major, world-class health infrastructure,” he stated.
When completed and equipped, the new Mother and Child Block will bring together several specialised departments and medical services designed to improve the delivery of maternal and child healthcare.
The facility will include Obstetrics and Gynaecology Wards, Labour and Delivery Suites and Operating Theatres, providing dedicated spaces for antenatal care, childbirth and surgical procedures.
It will also have a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to support patients and newborns requiring specialised and critical care.
Another major component will be an In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, complemented by Fertility and Reproductive Health Clinics.
The proposed block will further accommodate Antenatal and Postnatal Clinics, Breastfeeding and Family Planning Units, and an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit to provide comprehensive services to women throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.
The project will also incorporate key diagnostic and support services, including a Diagnostic Imaging Department, Laboratory and Blood Bank Facilities, and a Pharmacy Department.
A Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) will also form part of the facility, supporting the sterilisation and safe preparation of medical equipment for clinical procedures and surgeries.
In addition, the block will have Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Units, as well as dedicated facilities for teaching, research and conferences.
The inclusion of teaching and research facilities is expected to complement Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s established role as a major centre for medical education, specialist training and research in Ghana.
The commencement of land preparation represents an initial phase of the project, which is intended to provide modern infrastructure for maternal, neonatal and reproductive healthcare at one of the country’s leading tertiary health institutions.
Once completed, the facility is expected to expand Korle Bu’s capacity to provide specialised services to mothers, newborns and patients requiring reproductive healthcare, while providing healthcare professionals with a modern environment for clinical practice, training and research.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and strengthen access to quality maternal and child health services across Ghana.
