The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to building a modern, technology-driven, and people-centred National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) that guarantees accessible and affordable healthcare for all Ghanaians.

Speaking during an X Spaces discussion titled “NHIS Unpacked: The Future of Healthcare for Young People,” hosted by popular digital influencers KalyJay and Dr. George, Dr. Bampoe outlined key reforms, digital innovations, healthcare financing measures, and youth-focused initiatives being pursued by the Authority.

A major highlight of the conversation was the role of technology in transforming healthcare delivery across the country. Dr. Bampoe noted that the NHIA is leveraging digital platforms such as the MyNHIS Mobile App, the *929# USSD service, biometric verification systems, and the One-Time Attendance Code (OTAC) to improve service delivery, enhance transparency, and curb fraud within the Scheme.

According to him, the MyNHIS App enables members to register, renew their memberships, locate accredited healthcare facilities and pharmacies, access benefit packages, and manage their NHIS accounts conveniently from their mobile devices.

Dr. Bampoe also highlighted the significance of the government’s Free Primary Healthcare initiative, describing it as a transformative intervention aimed at strengthening preventive healthcare and promoting early disease detection.

He explained that the initiative seeks to identify conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and kidney disease at an early stage, helping to prevent complications and reducing the cost of treatment.

“Prevention remains one of the most effective ways of ensuring the long-term sustainability of the NHIS.

Early diagnosis not only saves lives but also significantly reduces healthcare expenditure,” he noted.

On healthcare financing, Dr. Bampoe revealed that the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Fund under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama has strengthened the financial position of the NHIS.

He stated that the Authority is now receiving its full allocation of funds, enabling it to settle claims and make timely payments to healthcare providers nationwide.

The NHIA Chief Executive further underscored the Authority’s commitment to transparency and accountability through its Sunshine Policy, which publicly discloses payments made to credentialed healthcare facilities.

According to him, the policy allows citizens to monitor payments to service providers and enhances public confidence in the management of NHIS resources.

Addressing concerns about illegal charges and extortion at some healthcare facilities, Dr. Bampoe disclosed that the NHIA has strengthened its digital complaint management systems to enable members to report such incidents and other service delivery challenges through multiple channels, including the MyNHIS App, customer service platforms, and social media.

The discussion also focused extensively on the role of young people in shaping the future of healthcare in Ghana.
Dr. Bampoe stressed that young people are not only the future of the country but also the foundation upon which that future will be built.

He disclosed that the NHIA has intensified investments in youth mentorship and engagement programmes to ensure young people actively participate in healthcare discussions and policy conversations.

He encouraged students, entrepreneurs, and young professionals to remain enrolled on the NHIS, describing good health as one of the most valuable assets an individual can possess.

Dr. Bampoe concluded by reiterating his vision of leaving behind a trusted, efficient, youth-friendly, and people-centred NHIA that harnesses innovation and technology to improve healthcare access and outcomes for all Ghanaians.

The X Spaces conversation attracted significant participation from young people and members of the public, providing a platform for direct engagement on healthcare reforms, the future of the NHIS, and ongoing efforts to strengthen service delivery across the country.
