Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has taken a subtle swipe at the National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, over the ongoing nationwide “Thank You Tour” following the party’s victory in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking in Sawla in the Savannah Region on Friday, May 22, in the presence of President John Dramani Mahama, the Education Minister described the President’s direct engagements with party supporters as the “proper” thank-you tour.
“I recall when the President came for his thank you tour, not the other thank you tour. A proper thank you tour of President Mahama, not the curtain-raiser one,”
Haruna Iddrisu remarked, drawing laughter and reactions from party supporters gathered at the event.
The comments are widely being interpreted as a veiled jab at Asiedu Nketiah, who has in recent weeks embarked on a separate nationwide tour to express appreciation to party faithful for the NDC’s electoral victory in the 2024 polls.
Although Haruna Iddrisu did not directly mention Asiedu Nketiah by name in his remarks, the timing and wording of the statement have fueled political discussions within the party, with many observers suggesting it reflects underlying tensions or rivalry regarding post-election recognition and party visibility.
President Mahama has also been touring various parts of the country to thank Ghanaians and NDC supporters for returning the party to power.
His engagements have attracted large crowds, with government officials and party executives accompanying him to several regions.
The latest comments from the Education Minister come at a time when the NDC leadership is seeking to project unity following its return to government after the 2024 elections.
