Financial Economist and Academic, Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, has urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect a new crop of national executives capable of reconnecting the party with its grassroots ahead of future elections.
His remarks come ahead of the NPP’s National Delegates Conference scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026, where delegates will elect new national officers in accordance with Article 10(1) of the party’s constitution.
In a statement shared on social media, Dr. Opoku argued that the party’s crushing defeat in the 2024 general elections was partly due to what he described as weak grassroots mobilisation by the party’s organisers.
According to him, while leading figures of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), including Joseph Yamin, Elikem Kotoko, Justice Yeboah, Malik Basintale and other party organisers, were actively campaigning in rural communities, villages and hinterland areas to canvass votes for then-presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama, their counterparts in the NPP were focused on organising health walks in major cities.
“While Joseph Yamin, Elikem Kotoko, Justice Yeboah, Malik Basintale and other Organizers of the NDC were on the ground, in some rural areas, villages and hinterland chasing votes for John Mahama in 2024, the Organizers of the NPP were busy hosting health walks within the capital cities across the country, resulting in the most humiliating defeat ever for the NPP,” he stated.
He therefore called on delegates to choose leaders who possess strong organisational skills and are prepared to work at the grassroots level rather than concentrating on symbolic activities.
“The delegates of the NPP should elect executives who can function properly beyond organising health walks and demonstrations,” Dr. Opoku added.
His comments come as the opposition party prepares for a major internal reorganisation following its loss in the 2024 general elections.
The NPP has officially announced that its National Delegates Conference will take place on September 19, 2026, following approval by the National Council after a proposal by the National Executive Committee (NEC).
The party has indicated that the conference will be held in accordance with Article 10(1) of the NPP Constitution.
Ahead of the conference, the party has also invited members and stakeholders to submit proposals for amendments to its constitution.
The proposals were to be submitted to the Office of the General Secretary at the party’s national headquarters or electronically via the designated email address by Friday, July 17, 2026.
The upcoming conference is expected to shape the future direction of the NPP as it seeks to reorganise its leadership structure and position itself for the 2028 general elections.
