The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has taken a major step towards modernising fire safety regulation and compliance management by training 983 officers on the newly introduced Automated Fire Compliance and Safety System (AFCAS), a digital platform designed to improve efficiency, transparency, and service delivery across the country.
The two-day intensive capacity-building programme was held at the Fire Academy and Training School (FATS) in James Town, Accra, and brought together officers from five regional commands—Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Northern, and Greater Accra.
The training was organised under the theme, “Strengthening Fire Safety Compliance Through Technology, Professionalism and Digital Innovation.”
The initiative forms part of the Service’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at equipping personnel with the skills and knowledge required to effectively operate and manage the AFCAS platform.
The programme is one of several structured training interventions designed to continuously enhance the competencies of officers as the GNFS transitions towards a more technology-driven regulatory and compliance framework.
The Automated Fire Compliance and Safety System is expected to revolutionise the way fire safety certification and compliance monitoring are conducted in the country.
The platform has been developed to streamline certification processes, improve regulatory oversight, reduce administrative delays, and enhance accountability and transparency within the fire safety sector.
According to the GNFS, the digital system will significantly improve regulatory efficiency while making fire safety compliance processes more accessible and responsive to businesses, institutions, and the general public.
As part of the initial implementation phase, the AFCAS project will be piloted in the five regional commands whose officers participated in the training programme.
The pilot rollout will provide an opportunity for the Service to assess the effectiveness of the platform and address any operational challenges before expanding the system nationwide.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong congratulated both participants and facilitators for the successful execution of the training programme.
She praised the officers for their commitment, discipline, and active participation throughout the sessions, describing the exercise as a significant milestone in the Ghana National Fire Service’s efforts to embrace technology and modernise its operations.
The Chief Fire Officer urged participants to put the knowledge acquired into practice and extend the training to other personnel at their respective stations to ensure a seamless and effective implementation of the AFCAS platform across all operational units.
She encouraged the officers to serve as ambassadors of the new system by promoting its adoption and educating colleagues on its benefits within their commands.
CFO Ntow Sarpong stressed that while technology remains a critical tool for improving fire safety compliance, the success of AFCAS will ultimately depend on the professionalism, commitment, and collective responsibility of officers and stakeholders.
She underscored the importance of teamwork, innovation, and adherence to professional standards in strengthening fire safety regulation and enhancing service delivery across the country.
“The successful implementation of AFCAS is a strategic step toward modernising fire safety administration. We are counting on officers and the public alike to support this innovation so that together we can prevent avoidable fires and protect lives and property,” she stated.
Public Support Crucial
The Chief Fire Officer also called on the public, businesses, institutions, and other stakeholders to embrace the AFCAS initiative and collaborate closely with the Ghana National Fire Service in promoting fire safety compliance.
She noted that reducing preventable fire outbreaks and fire-related incidents requires a collective effort, emphasizing that public cooperation and sustained compliance remain essential to building a safer and more resilient Ghana.
The AFCAS initiative is expected to mark a significant turning point in Ghana’s fire safety administration, reinforcing the government’s broader commitment to leveraging digital technology to improve public service delivery and enhance national safety standards.
