The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for a group of armed robbers who attacked the Berekum Chelsea Football Club team along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahin District, leaving one person dead.
The incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m., according to a press release issued by the Police Public Affairs Unit.
Police say a patrol team responded swiftly to distress calls and rushed to the scene, where they found a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20.
The vehicle, which was carrying about 30 football players and officials of Berekum Chelsea, had veered off the road and landed in a nearby bush while attempting to escape the attackers.
Preliminary investigations indicate that six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump-action guns, ambushed the bus as it traveled from Samreboi to Berekum.
During the attack, one of the players, Dominic Frimpong, sustained gunshot injuries.
He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
In addition to the fatal shooting, another victim, identified as 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of GH¢4,500.
Police investigators recovered two spent cartridges from the scene to aid ongoing investigations.
The Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area as efforts intensify to track down the suspects.
Authorities have assured the public that the perpetrators will be apprehended as soon as possible and have urged residents to remain calm while maintaining confidence in the police as investigations continue.
