The footballing world is bracing for a high-stakes legal showdown following the announcement that the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has officially appealed the decision to strip the Lions of Teranga of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the continent, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed on March 25, 2026, that the FSF is seeking to overturn the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) ruling and have Senegal reinstated as champions.

According to the statement released by CAS, the FSF’s appeal is direct and ambitious.

The federation “seeks to set aside the CAF decision and declare the FSF winners of AFCON.”

While the specific details behind CAF’s initial decision to strip the title remain under a shroud of procedural mystery, the FSF is clearly digging in for a fight.

In addition to the appeal, the Senegalese legal team has requested an immediate suspension of the time limit to submit their full appeal brief.

Access to the “full grounds” of CAF’s decision, arguing they cannot properly defend their title until they have the complete reasoning behind the initial ruling.

The case now moves to Lausanne, Switzerland, where a CAS Arbitral Panel will be appointed to weigh the evidence. Once the panel is formed, a procedural calendar will be established to dictate the timeline of the hearings.

Matthieu Reeb, the Director General of CAS, attempted to reassure anxious fans and stakeholders that the matter is in capable hands.

”CAS is perfectly equipped to resolve this type of dispute, with the assistance of expert and independent arbitrators,” Reeb stated.

“We understand that teams and fans are eager to know the final decision, and we will ensure that arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible.”

Stripping a nation of a major international trophy is a rare and drastic measure in global football.

For Senegal, a powerhouse of African football, the loss of the title is a blow to national pride and their “Golden Generation’s” legacy.

For CAF, the integrity of the tournament is at stake.

As the legal machinery begins to grind, the question remains: Will the trophy return to Dakar, or will the CAF ruling stand?
