Six male occupants have sustained injuries after a Toyota Corolla plunged into the Birim River at Biremso on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, near Anyinasin Junction, in the Eastern Region.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, and prompted a swift response from the Bunso Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
According to the GNFS, a distress call reporting the accident was received at 9:04 a.m. A duty crew led by ADO II Dacosta Amankwah was immediately dispatched to the scene at 9:06 a.m. and arrived at about 9:11 a.m.
An eyewitness told fire personnel that he heard a loud crash and rushed towards the area to ascertain what had happened.
Upon reaching the scene, he reportedly found a black Toyota Corolla with registration number GR 1425-18 submerged in the Birim River.
Before the arrival of the GNFS rescue team, members of the public had already intervened and rescued the occupants from the damaged vehicle.
The six injured men were subsequently conveyed to Hawa Saviour Memorial Hospital, where they received medical attention.
The GNFS confirmed that no fatalities were recorded in the incident.
The Toyota Corolla, however, was extensively damaged in the crash. Some personal belongings belonging to the occupants were also recovered from the vehicle.
The circumstances that led to the vehicle veering off the Accra-Kumasi Highway and plunging into the river remain unclear.
Authorities have commenced investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers motorists face along major highways, particularly sections where vehicles can potentially veer off the roadway into waterways.
