Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has visited the Accra New Town Experimental School following the tragic collapse of a multi-storey building on the premises.
During the visit, she received a comprehensive briefing on the status of survivors and the progress of ongoing recovery operations.
The Vice President was joined by Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak and high-ranking officials from the Ghana Armed Forces (48 Engineer Regiment), the Police Service, the Fire Service, the National Ambulance Service, and NADMO.
Latest figures from the site confirm that 23 victims have been successfully rescued from the debris; tragically, three lives have been confirmed lost.
Search and rescue teams remain on-site, with operations expected to continue for several days until the area is fully cleared.
”The swift, coordinated response by our emergency services has been commendable,” the Vice President stated.
She also extended a special word of thanks to the local community members who acted as first responders during the critical moments immediately following the collapse.
Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President offered deep condolences to the bereaved families.
However, she paired her sympathy with a firm call for structural reform.
She emphasized that the state must move beyond reactive emergency measures and tackle the root causes of such disasters.
She stressed two primary pillars for future prevention: rigorous compliance with all national building regulations; and ensuring those responsible for structural integrity are held answerable at every level.
Following her assessment of the site, the Vice President traveled to various medical facilities to meet with survivors.
At the 37 Military Hospital and the Police Hospital, she was accompanied by IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as she met with victims receiving urgent care.
She was later joined by Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), where she spent time with injured students and staff.
The Vice President assured all victims and their families that the Government will provide full support, both medical and logistical, throughout their recovery process.
