The senior national football team, the Black Stars, head coach, Carlos Queiroz, has praised the determination and tactical discipline of his players following Ghana’s hard-fought victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Speaking after the tense encounter, Queiroz admitted that his side had to endure difficult moments against a technically gifted Panama team, but emphasized that Ghana’s game plan worked perfectly.

According to the experienced coach, the Black Stars approached the game knowing Panama would dominate possession for long spells, forcing Ghana to remain patient and disciplined before capitalizing on their opportunities.

“First we had to suffer, we battled like warriors. We won the game with the brains,” Queiroz said after the match.

The Black Stars coach explained that the first half was particularly challenging because Panama controlled large portions of the game with their organized style of play and tactical movement.

“The first half was about suffering against a great team. They know how to play, they know how to do things,” he stated.

Queiroz revealed that Ghana intentionally allowed Panama to dictate the tempo early in the game as part of a calculated strategy designed to create openings later in the match.

“We knew that they would control the game but, step-by-step, this was our strategy — to let them come and take control until we scored, because this is the way to win. Win all the time,” he added.

The victory gives the Black Stars a strong start in Group L and boosts confidence within the squad as they continue their quest to qualify for the next stage of the tournament.

Ghana’s disciplined defensive display and tactical patience earned praise from supporters, with many applauding the team’s resilience under pressure against a stubborn Panama side.

Queiroz’s comments also highlighted the mentality he wants his players to maintain throughout the competition — a blend of tactical intelligence, discipline, and fighting spirit.

The Black Stars will now shift attention to their next group game as they aim to build momentum and strengthen their position in the race for qualification.
