Residents in parts of the Weija-Gbawe Municipality in the Greater Accra Region are battling severe flooding following the spillage from the Weija Dam, with several families displaced and properties submerged.
The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe and Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has described the situation as heartbreaking after visiting affected communities to assess the extent of destruction caused by the floods.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the MP said he toured flood-hit areas and interacted with residents who have been forced to flee their homes due to rising water levels triggered by the dam spillage.
According to him, several houses have been inundated, leaving many families stranded and struggling to salvage their belongings.
“Today, I visited residents affected by the flooding in parts of Weija following the spillage from the Weija Dam.
The situation on the ground was heartbreaking, as several homes have been submerged, forcing many families to leave their homes for safety,” he stated.
During the visit, Mr. Shaib said he personally assisted some residents in packing their belongings while also helping to secure temporary accommodation for displaced victims.
The lawmaker noted that many affected residents are currently facing difficult living conditions and urgently require humanitarian support to cope with the disaster.
He therefore called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), government agencies, and other relevant institutions to immediately intervene with relief items and emergency assistance.
“The impact of the flooding is serious and requires urgent attention to prevent further hardship for residents,” he stressed.
He further appealed for collective support from all stakeholders and community members to help protect lives and property as authorities work to manage the flooding situation.
The Weija Dam spillage has over the years remained a major concern for residents living along flood-prone communities within the municipality, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
Communities affected by similar incidents often experience destruction to homes, displacement of families, damage to personal property, and disruption of economic activities.
Residents are meanwhile calling for long-term measures to address recurring flooding in the area and improve emergency response systems to reduce the impact on vulnerable communities.
