A 52-year-old South African national has been arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg after authorities allegedly discovered suspected heroin valued at more than R2 million in his luggage.

The arrest was carried out on Sunday, September 20, 2026, during an intelligence-driven operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Border Management Authority (BMA).

According to the police, the suspect had arrived at the airport on a flight from Accra, Ghana, when he was intercepted by law enforcement officers for further checks.

A subsequent search of his luggage allegedly led to the discovery of several bullet-shaped items and blocks containing substances believed to be heroin.

The suspected narcotics are estimated to have a street value exceeding R2 million, reportedly equivalent to more than GH¢1.4 million.

Police have taken the suspect into custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the shipment.

He is expected to be brought before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court later this week to face charges related to the alleged trafficking of illegal drugs.

Authorities said investigators are working to establish where the suspected heroin originated from and whether the suspect was acting alone or as part of a larger drug trafficking network.

The SAPS said it would continue to intensify intelligence-led and targeted operations at the country’s entry points to disrupt organised drug trafficking and prevent the movement of narcotics through South Africa.

The latest arrest also comes amid heightened attention on suspected drug trafficking routes involving Ghana.

In recent months, reports of drug-related arrests involving shipments allegedly linked to Ghana have generated concern, prompting the Presidency to establish a task force to investigate such cases and examine the networks behind the movement of illicit drugs.

The investigation into the latest arrest is ongoing, and the suspect remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
