Tension continues to mount within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council have officially referred petitions filed against former Assin Central Member of Parliament and former presidential aspirant, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, to the party’s National Disciplinary Committee for investigation.
The confirmation was made by the NPP National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as “Nana B,” during an interview with Joy News amid growing speculation and reports on social media suggesting that Kennedy Agyapong had already been expelled from the party.
Nana B, however, firmly dismissed those claims, insisting that no such decision has been taken and that the party is merely following constitutional and procedural processes after receiving multiple complaints from party members and some Members of Parliament.
According to him, the petitions were submitted by individuals from different levels within the party structure, compelling the NEC and National Council to activate the party’s disciplinary mechanisms.
“Oh yes, we had petitions from some individuals, party people, and also even some Members of Parliament. So constitutionally and procedurally, the National Executive Committee and National Council referred the matter to the Disciplinary Committee,” he stated.
He explained that the disciplinary committee, chaired by former Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, has been tasked to investigate the petitions and submit its findings within two weeks through the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong-Kodua, for further consideration by the NEC and National Council.
“We have also given them timelines. We said in two weeks they must present their report to the National Executive Committee through the General Secretary. So we are waiting for their work,” Nana B said.
The NPP National Organizer stressed that the referral of the matter to the disciplinary committee should not be misconstrued as an indication that Kennedy Agyapong has already been found guilty of misconduct.
He emphasized that the party’s constitution requires all formal petitions to be forwarded to the appropriate body for assessment, regardless of the perceived merits of the complaints.
“I mean, once there are petitions, what is important is that you have to refer the matter to the Disciplinary Committee whatever the merits are,” he explained.
According to him, the final determination on the matter will only be made after the disciplinary committee presents its report and recommendations to the NEC and National Council for deliberation.
“The most important thing is that the report from the Disciplinary Committee will be a subject matter for NEC and the National Council to consider afterwards. That is where we can really speak to it,” he noted.
Nana B further stated that the leadership of the NPP is determined to deal with the issue expeditiously to prevent prolonged internal tensions and divisions within the party.
“As it stands now, the position is that we have referred all petitions received regarding Hon. Kennedy Agyapong to the National Disciplinary Committee, and we have given them two weeks because we wanted to really make sure that in two weeks we deal with this matter,” he added.
When questioned about the exact number of petitions received against the outspoken former lawmaker, Nana B indicated that he did not have the figures readily available but confirmed that the complaints came from multiple sources within the party.
“I mentioned that some individuals, some party people, and also some Members of Parliament as well,” he stated, adding, “We were just told that there have been some petitions from some party persons and also some members.”
The latest development follows growing tensions between Kennedy Agyapong and sections of the NPP leadership after a series of fiery public remarks made by the former presidential aspirant in recent weeks.
Kennedy Agyapong, known for his outspoken and confrontational political style, has openly criticized some decisions taken by the party leadership and has also questioned the handling of several government and party-related issues.
His recent warnings of a possible “showdown” with the party, coupled with sharp criticism directed at the leadership, are believed to have triggered renewed calls from some party faithful and members of the party’s student wing for disciplinary action to be taken against him.
While some members within the party are pushing for his suspension or outright expulsion in the interest of party discipline and unity, others have cautioned that taking drastic action against a political heavyweight like Kennedy Agyapong could have serious political consequences for the NPP.
Some argue that Kennedy Agyapong still commands significant grassroots support across many constituencies and remains highly influential among sections of the party’s base.
They warn that any attempt to excommunicate him from the party could deepen existing cracks within the NPP and weaken the party’s chances ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The issue has since sparked widespread political debate both within the NPP and among the general public, especially in the aftermath of the party’s fiercely contested 2024 presidential primaries in which Kennedy Agyapong emerged as one of the leading contenders but ultimately lost the flagbearership race.
As anticipation builds over the disciplinary committee’s findings, the NPP leadership maintains that due process will be followed and that no final decision has yet been taken regarding Kennedy Agyapong’s future in the party.
