Four people have been confirmed dead following a gory road accident at the Ekumfi Esuehyia Junction on the Mankessim-Apam highway in the Central Region.
The fatal crash occurred on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m., involving a Toyota Vitz with registration number GM 3758-26 and a DAF bus bearing foreign registration number SGB 897XB.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Mankessim Fire Station received a distress call at about 10:30 p.m. reporting the accident.
A rescue team was subsequently dispatched to the scene and arrived at approximately 10:59 p.m., where firefighters found four occupants of the Toyota Vitz trapped inside the mangled vehicle.
The trapped victims comprised one female and three males.
Firefighters immediately commenced rescue operations and successfully extricated the four victims from the wreckage.
However, personnel of the National Ambulance Service, who were also at the scene, examined the victims and confirmed that all four had died.
The bodies were subsequently handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further procedures.
The four occupants of the Toyota Vitz were the only fatalities recorded in the crash.
Six occupants of the DAF bus, meanwhile, sustained minor injuries and received attention following the collision.
The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, said preliminary information gathered from one of the DAF bus passengers suggested that the bus was travelling from Ivory Coast to Nigeria when the crash occurred.
The Toyota Vitz, according to the preliminary account, was travelling in the direction of Cape Coast when it was involved in the head-on collision with the bus.
The circumstances that led to the two vehicles colliding, however, remain unclear.
Authorities have yet to establish the definitive cause of the accident.
Investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the movements of both vehicles immediately before the crash.
Following the rescue operation, the fire crew also cleared debris from the roadway to restore the free flow of traffic and reduce the risk of further accidents.
The incident adds to concerns over road safety along the Mankessim-Apam highway, particularly the risks associated with night-time travel and head-on collisions.
