The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Achiase in the Eastern Region, Hon. Samuel Owusu Brako, has pledged to tackle street begging in the district by empowering Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with equipment and financial support to establish sustainable livelihoods.
He said the Achiase District Assembly would continue to utilise the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to provide vocational equipment, start-up capital and other forms of assistance to PWDs to enable them to engage in productive economic activities and attain financial independence.
Hon. Owusu Brako made the remarks on Friday, August 14, 2026, when the Assembly presented start-up equipment and financial support to **82 PWDs** across the district.

The beneficiaries received items including deep freezers, sewing machines, fufu pounding machines and other processing equipment to enable them to establish or expand small-scale businesses.
According to the DCE, the intervention is aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, self-reliance and improved livelihoods among PWDs, while creating opportunities for them to contribute meaningfully to the local economy.
He urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items and treat them as long-term investments rather than assets to be sold for quick financial gains.
“You have received these items, so take good care of them and use them prudently to benefit and enhance your livelihoods,” he said.
Hon. Owusu Brako specifically cautioned the beneficiaries against selling, exchanging or misusing the equipment, stressing that the Assembly expected them to use the items for their intended purposes.
“Beneficiaries are strictly warned against selling or trading the equipment for quick cash, and you are expected to care for the tools to ensure long-term utility,” he cautioned.
He added that the Assembly’s support was intended to create lasting economic opportunities and not merely provide temporary relief.
The DCE further disclosed that the Social Welfare and Community Development Department would conduct regular monitoring and follow-up visits to ensure that the equipment was being properly utilised.
The monitoring exercise, he said, would also help the Assembly identify challenges confronting beneficiaries and determine how they could be supported to sustain their businesses.
Hon. Owusu Brako assured other PWDs who were not part of the latest distribution that they would be considered in subsequent interventions.
“We shall give the other colleagues of yours who could not receive the items today, so don’t misuse the equipment,” he told the beneficiaries.
He reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to inclusive development, emphasising that physical disability should not prevent anyone from attaining economic independence.
The DCE said empowering PWDs would not only improve their individual livelihoods but also reduce dependence on street begging and enable beneficiaries to support their families.
The latest intervention forms part of the Achiase District Assembly’s efforts to use the DACF to improve the livelihoods of vulnerable groups and promote economic inclusion across the district.
