The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Chairman for Akyem Swedru in the Eastern Region, Dominic Fobi, has accused the area’s Member of Parliament, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, of allegedly hijacking the party’s constituency structures and appointing individuals to executive positions without elections.
Mr Fobi says the alleged appointments have created uncertainty over the legitimacy of individuals expected to represent the constituency at the NPP’s National Annual Delegates Conference scheduled for October 3, 2026, in Kumasi.
According to him, no polling station or constituency elections have been held in Akyem Swedru because of a court injunction, yet individuals allegedly selected by the MP have been recognised within the party structure and are preparing to participate in the national conference.
Speaking to 1960news.com, Mr Fobi said he does not recognise the alleged appointees as legitimate constituency executives until elections are held in accordance with the party’s internal processes.
“I have been a member of the Danquah-Dombo-Bussia family since childhood. I have held key positions including constituency organiser, first and second vice-chairman and constituency chairman for the past 16 years, and I know how democratic, fair and transparent the NPP has conducted its internal elections,” he said.
Mr Fobi maintained that the NPP’s Eastern Regional Chairman, Jeff Kunadu Addo, and the party’s national leadership are aware of the alleged court injunction preventing the conduct of the constituency’s internal elections.
“As far as I know, there is a court injunction on Akyem Swedru NPP constituency elections which the regional chairman, Jeff Kunadu Addo, and the national executives are aware. So, we have not gone to the polls to elect anyone as polling station or constituency executives,” he alleged.
He questioned how individuals could subsequently be recognised as executives and represent the constituency in higher-level party activities when, according to him, the required grassroots elections had not taken place.
Mr Fobi further alleged that the disputed individuals were allowed to participate in the recent NPP regional elections in Koforidua despite the absence of constituency elections.
The constituency chairman also alleged that he had been replaced without an election being held to choose a successor.
“As I speak, he has appointed someone else to take my position as chairman without elections, and this person, including other people appointed as constituency executives, are preparing to participate in the National Annual Delegates Conference in Kumasi,” he claimed.
He is therefore calling on the NPP’s national leadership to clarify the status of the disputed executives before the conference, particularly regarding their eligibility to participate in the election of national officers.
Mr Fobi argued that the matter should be resolved through the party’s established democratic procedures and in accordance with the applicable court processes.
Mr Fobi further alleged that the appointments are connected to Mr Kennedy Osei Nyarko’s political ambitions and a possible future contest of the NPP parliamentary primary in the constituency.
He accused the MP of allegedly favouring individuals considered sympathetic to him and placing them in key positions within the constituency’s party structures.
Mr Fobi also accused the MP of allegedly being intolerant of opposing views, claiming that internal disagreements have contributed to declining electoral performance by the NPP in Akyem Swedru.
“The MP’s dislike for opposite views in the party has hugely affected our vote margins,” he alleged.
He called on the party’s national leadership to review the constituency’s electoral performance over successive elections and identify measures to strengthen its grassroots organisation.
Mr Fobi wants the NPP’s regional and national leadership to intervene in the dispute and provide clarity on the legitimate representation of Akyem Swedru at the upcoming National Annual Delegates Conference.
He maintained that until the legal issues surrounding the constituency elections are resolved and the appropriate elections are conducted, individuals appointed without a vote should not be treated as elected constituency executives.
He also appealed for reconciliation among the various factions within the constituency, saying restoring unity and confidence in the party’s structures would be essential to improving its grassroots organisation ahead of future elections.
