The Ghana Police Service has announced a major breakthrough in the fight against organised crime following a large-scale intelligence-led operation carried out across several parts of the Ashanti Region.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters on June 23, 2026, the Inspector-General of Police (I.G.P.) Special Operations Team (SOT), working in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, conducted a series of coordinated operations between June 8 and June 17, 2026.
The operations targeted criminal syndicates allegedly involved in human trafficking, sexual exploitation, narcotics trafficking, unlawful possession of firearms and other organised criminal activities.
The Police explained that the exercise was based on credible intelligence, extensive surveillance, target profiling and strategic operational planning aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating within the region.
The intelligence-led operations were conducted simultaneously in several communities including Asafo, Kenyase Aframa, Asokwa, Buokrom, Krofrom, Atonsu-Bokuro, Asawase and Old Tafo Ahenbronum.
In total, the operations led to the arrest of one hundred and eighty-six (186) suspects.
The suspects comprise eighty-six (86) Ghanaians, ninety-six (96) Nigerians and four (4) Togolese nationals.
The Police identified one of the key suspects arrested during the operation as Gladys Ibrahim, also known as “Mama Gee.”
According to the statement, a major breakthrough was achieved on June 9, 2026, at Kenyase Aframa, where security operatives arrested Mama Gee together with ninety-six Nigerian nationals and four Togolese nationals during a coordinated swoop.
Preliminary investigations by the Police suggest that the suspects are linked to a transnational organised crime syndicate allegedly involved in human trafficking, sexual exploitation, narcotics trafficking and related criminal activities.
The operation also led to the rescue of several persons believed to be victims of exploitation.
Police disclosed that some of the rescued individuals were minors who were immediately separated from the suspects and placed under protective custody in line with established child protection protocols.
Authorities further indicated that foreign nationals identified as victims are currently being processed in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service to facilitate the necessary immigration and repatriation procedures.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command commended the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by officers of the I.G.P. Special Operations Team and personnel of the Ashanti Regional Police Command whose collaborative efforts contributed to the successful execution of the operation.
The Police noted that investigations are still ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the criminal network.
“All suspects remain in police custody or are assisting with investigations,” the statement added.
The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led policing and assured the public that sustained operations would continue across the country to combat organised crime and ensure the safety and security of residents.
