In a spirited defense of President John Dramani Mahama, the Assemblies of God, Ghana, has described the withdrawal of an honorary doctorate by Lincoln University as a “badge of honor” rather than a disgrace.

The Pennsylvania-based university recently rescinded the honor in protest of Mahama’s stance on Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.

However, the church to which the president belongs is framing the snub as a victory for faith and traditional values.

In an official statement, the church leadership expressed that they are “compelled to rally swiftly” behind Mahama.

Instead of disappointment, the church reported a sense of “joy unconfined” among its members, citing the biblical example of the apostles who rejoiced after being persecuted for their beliefs.

”Lincoln University’s decision does not dishonor, but rather honors President Mahama.

It resonates with the biblical scenario in Acts 5:41, where the apostles rejoiced because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name of the Lord.”

The Assemblies of God highlighted Mahama’s consistency on the issue.

They recalled his public declarations leading up to the 2024 elections, where he labeled LGBTQ+ practices asscripturally and biblically forbidden, morally degrading, culturally unacceptable.

The church lauded this “ironclad stand,” noting that his refusal to compromise under international pressure is a “spectacular example” for Christians in both the public and private sectors.

The statement concluded with a stern charge to the Christian community in Ghana.

The church urged its members to remain unshakable in their moral convictions, regardless of the consequences on the global stage.

They further called for “intense and tenacious” prayer to protect the nation from what they described as the “incalculable consequences” of shifting moral boundaries.
